Durapower Group To Electrify AGVs For PSA Singapore
Singapore, 9 August 2021 – Durapower Group is excited to announce that it has been awarded a contract by PSA Singapore to electrify its Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), further strengthening its position as the ideal solutions provider for innovative Lithium-Ion Batteries. Featuring flexible, lightweight energy-efficient Lithium-Ion Batteries in an all-new electric driveline, part of the port’s day-to-day container terminal operations will be enhanced for efficiency. This also marks yet another milestone in the Group’s electrification journey of AGVs for maritime container terminals – and comes at a time when Singapore sets out to reinvigorate the maritime sector.
Focus On Environmental Sustainability
With the increasing focus on shipping and the environment, Durapower Group is committed to maritime sustainability and developing environmentally-friendly products that deliver value. Since 2012, Durapower Group has been electrifying PSA Singapore’s hybrid electric AGVs. This new order of 54 Lithium-Ion Battery systems for the Singapore port operator’s electric AGVs is in addition to the existing supply of 81 Battery systems. In collaboration with designated vehicle manufacturers, the deployment of a fully electric fleet of AGVs will boost connectivity and improve port operations. The new fleet is expected to optimise the speed of handling heavy containerised cargos, ensuring the highest levels of operability to meet and exceed fulfilment expectations.
In addition to boosting fulfilment processes, and in consideration of the world’s climate goals, the new fleet of AGVs are also designed to address the global climate change initiative. With the new fleet of AGVs, PSA Singapore’s upcoming Tuas Port is primed to lead as the world’s largest fully automated green port, thereby reinforcing the city-state’s Maritime Singapore Green Initiative.
Durapower Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Kelvin Lim says: “This is an integral step in advancing our commercial cooperation with PSA Singapore as we steer into the maritime sector. This agreement, combined with our existing partnerships, will consolidate our presence in the region and provide both existing and potential customers with access to high-powered innovative modular-designed Lithium-Ion Batteries that offer flexibility for a variety of applications across industries, including maritime. We are honoured to be part of the major decarbonising efforts of PSA Singapore.”
As part of the contract, Durapower Group will be supplying Fast Charging Lithium-Ion Battery systems for installation in their electric vehicles. The solution enables fast charging for 24/7 continuous operation and aims to reduce costs and improve productivity. Deliveries for this new batch of electric AGVs are scheduled to commence from January 2023. Durapower Group is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of the AGV battery solutions, integrated with the vehicles.
Maritime 2.0: Fully Automated Ports
Due to rapid technological advancements in automation, Artificial Intelligence and robotics, the maritime sector has seen an increase in the adoption of technology into its operations. Ports of call today recognise factors like turnaround time, need for carbon neutrality and cost of ownership of equipment could impact profitability. Integrating fully automated e-mobility applications like AGVs as part of container port operations are an innovative way of achieving fast and clean delivery of goods between vessels, berths and terminals for major port operators in the world. The move to include electric vehicles is fast becoming a decarbonisation strategy for operators. To-date, PSA Singapore is among the first few container ports in the world to spotlight a fully electric driveline.
As the lifeblood of Singapore’s economy, it is vital to have top-notch port-cargo handling equipment to keep this sector operating at its optimum, all-day, all-year round. Moreover, automation is essential in helping a facility of this scale and size, complexity and sophistication realise its full potential.
